PhD Studentships
Two Ph.D. Studentships are available with immediate effect:
These complimentary modelling projects are components of a designated work
package in the EU FP7 Large Collaborative Project "SEAT" (Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade). The SEAT project is based in Asia and
four geographic work areas have been identified; Thailand, Bangladesh, Vietnam and China. While the intention is that generalised models
will be developed for aquaculture systems and production areas within all four countries, one or more of these will be selected in
collaboration with project partners and other work-packages for special attention at a detailed resolution. These studentships are
50% funded by the EU SEAT project and 50% by the Institute.
Application deadline 15th February 2010.
Projects available:
Environment Group
Development of Environmental Models to aid sustainable aquaculture.
This project will develop deterministic, dynamic models for quantitative investigation of environmental sustainability, based on local nutrient and chemical dynamics, for different aquaculture production systems in south-east Asia. It is envisaged that the models will be developed within established modelling framework software, such as Stella™. These models will aid in the development of environmental quality standards and environmental management initiatives, and be incorporated into a spatial decision support system which will contribute to future ethical management standards for Asian aquaculture. Supervisors: Dr Trevor C Telfer & Professor Lindsay G Ross. .
GIS and Geotechnology Group.
Development of a spatial models of waste flow from aquaculture sytems.
This project will focus on spatial aspects of environmental modelling, an area that is frequently underexploited and often poorly understood. Using GIS, remotely sensed data and field data, dynamic models will be developed which allow investigation of likely levels of environmental contamination, the flow regimes and patterns of movement of contaminant materials within aquatic systems and aquaculture production areas, in south-east Asia, and the probable effects of such movements on aquaculture products. Supervisors: Professor Lindsay G Ross & Dr Trevor C Telfer
The successful applicant will have University tuition fees paid in full, and receive a maintenance bursary expected to
be approximately £15,000 per year (tax-free). Funding is available for UK or other EU nationals with appropriate residence
qualifications, and non-EU citizens with at least three years UK residence (excluding residence for full-time education).
