Expertise within the Parasitology team covers all the major parasite groups and can provide taxonomic identifications as part of its diagnostic service. In certain situations a precise identification is essential, especially where a pathogen like G. salaris, for example, is suspected. In this situation, we must be sure of the parasite identity before costly remedial measures are sanctioned. By determining the biodiversity of the parasite fauna within populations of fish, we are then better able to understand the interactions between different parasite species and their hosts so that we can make better decisions about their management, and where necessary, their control. Part of the identification process occasionally necessitates the examination of type material, which can result in the production of an amended description , a new host or country record or the description of new species.
