Since its inception the Institute of Aquaculture has maintained a central focus in international development. We are widely recognised for our contributions to the understanding of the causes poverty and for appropriate solutions we have helped to develop. Aquaculture provides livelihood opportunities for the poor through improving the productivity of both community and private waterbodies to provide income, employment and affordable food.

We work in partnership with a range of organisations, most often with developing country universities, government departments and NGOs (non-government organisations). These partnerships provide opportunities for Stirling staff and students to contribute directly to training and research development and allow for shared learning. Our international partnerships have strengthened and shaped the work of the Institute by engaging with the best international expertise, many of whom go on to manage aspects of aquaculture development in their home countries.

Within the Scottish Government's International Development Framework it states: "Scotland has a distinctive contribution to make in its work with developing countries recognising our global responsibility to work together to achieve the Millennium Development Goals." The Institute of Aquaculture, as the leading international development department at the University of Stirling, has an outstanding track record for contributing to this aim already. Our extensive experience has clearly contributed to the Millennium Development Goals.
