Developing practical strategies for reducing the spread of harmful organisms during the transportation of live fish

Evidence has suggested that fish transportation is a potential vector for the spread of harmful organisms in the UK. Given that a vast number of fish that are transported within the UK each year, the potential for spreading disease and harmful organisms may be significant.

In response to this concern and potential risk, this SARF funded project is being undertaken to develop practical strategies which may help reduce the spread of harmful organisms. The current focus of this project will be to consider strategies to prevent the spread of model bacterial (Yersinia rukeri), viral (VHS virus) and protozoal agents (Ichthyopthirius multifilis), and also a metazoan organism. Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) are a highly invasive, non-native species in the UK. They are considered a significant threat to freshwater biodiversity and, importantly, accidental translocation in fish transport water has been suggested as a potential cause for further spread of the species in the UK. Therefore, signal crayfish have been deemed a good model metazoan for inclusion in this project.
